Winter thrills in the District come in two forms: popping into congressional committee debates and taking bets on whose toupee will fall first, or sledding down 11th Street before realizing drivers on U Street don't stop for anything. Ditch those duds and sign on for an Adventure that promises fast slopes, which are hair-raising for much better reasons: a day of skiing or snowboarding at Wintergreen Resort with ski or snowboard rental and optional transportation from Arlington, VA.

Join us outside the Rosslyn station where our team of slope maneuvering maestros will be waiting. We'll board coach buses and settle in for a 3.5-hour ride to Wintergreen Resort (transportation is an additional $34). Those who opt out of the transportation option and who care to drive themselves can meet the group at Wintergreen Resort and check in at our designated area between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Once we arrive, we'll meet our resort liaisons and get suited up with either skis or snowboards and receive our day-long lift ticket. Rental is included, but optional for those who prefer to bring their own gear. For those who do decide to rent, be sure to enter this website three to five days before the arrival date to reserve equipment... otherwise, we'll be left with nothing to entertain us, except snowballs.

Once we're locked into our skis and loaded with adrenaline, it's go time. We'll be left to create our own Adventure (so to speak) as we criss cross over the 11,000-square-acre mountain face, choosing among easier green and blue, more difficult black diamond, and freestyle terrain runs. The resort sits atop the Blue Ridge Mountains at 3,000 feet above the valley, so we'll not only take in a great workout, we'll get to take in some stellar views as well. As the day winds down, we'll reconvene at our drop-off area, return our gear, shake off that snow, settle in our comfy seats on the bus as we make our journey home.
